Eagle Mural

History

Stephen Owens contacted Newton Murals and Arts about painting a mural for the food court plaza across from the Harvey County Courthouse at 526 N. Main in Newton, KS. Christa Jahay spearheaded this project and several artists associated with NMAP submitted designs, of which Jennifer Weigel’s was chosen. Owens wanted to honor the First Responders and Military in a mural that invited viewers to take a selfie with the painting, and the group wanted to create a selfie wings mural. Weigel’s design incorporated eagle wings in colors influenced by the Kansas landscape and United States flag. The imagery was inspired by life in Newton, Kansas and features the iconic clouds, sunflowers and wheat with a central focus on a steam engine projecting towards the viewer with the #wearenewton symbol at its center which has now become the official flag for the City of Newton.

The mural was completed in late summer, 2019.
